One of the best ideas ever - a combination cinema, restaurant, and bar. At the Alamo Drafthouse (two locations), you can enjoy a meal and drinks while watching new films, old favourites, and cult classics. A campy, often hilarious experience, the Alamo Drafthouse has a fun atmosphere, and indulges a wonderful laziness. You write your order on a slip of paper that you prop before your seat, on the bench-like table that sits in front. Waitstaff come around (quietly), collect the orders, and return shortly with the food - burgers, pizzas, salads, and more. You can also indulge in alcoholic drinks - including beer, margaritas (an Austin staple), sangria, or champagne, as the mood grabs you, but no kids are allowed. Then sit, back, eat, drink, and enjoy the show! The cinema itself is (perhaps inevitably) slightly grubby, but it won't stop you having a good time. One location shows new releases, while the other has theme nights, appearances by stars and directors, and shows independent films, so you can choose as the mood strikes you. Truly inspired, the Alamo Drafthouse will spoil you for ordinary cinema - what, no pitchers of beer, potato skins, ice cream sundaes? You'll begin to wonder how you ever managed to enjoy a film before. |
